Yes, that's Steph aka The Yarn Harlot (as if anyone in the knitblogosphere actually needed that pointing out to them.) She was funny, articulate and an alround great speaker, the event went fabulously, money was raised for Doctors Without Borders, and squares were knit for Warm Up America. See? (Paton's SWS kindly provided by the Craft Yarn council of America.)
One word though- GROUPIES. This might get me in trouble but, dudes, she's just one of us! We don't actually know her despite reading her blog since dinosaurs roamed the Earth, she's a private person who has opened up a little of her life to us, the wool-infused masses. It's lovely that she is so down to Earth but really, I don't think we should expect any different or raise her up on a pedestal. I'll get down from my soap box now.... (should I duck?)
The rational part of my brain totally agrees with you. However, I really enjoyed feeling totally irrational about see a "star" of the knitting world yesterday. It was really fun.
ReplyDeleteOh I agree with you that it was a lot of fun to see one of the "A-listers", and I enjoyed getting swept up in the hype surrounding the event. Giddiness is always fun.
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm just a little jaded. For example, I've worked with and am at a school where the absoulte superstars of science (Nobel Laureates, National Acedemy Members etc etc) roam the halls. These are the people I wish to emulate and who are idolised by many. But when you actually talk to them, hang out around them a little, you quickly figure out that they're just people. Smart people, but just people who eat and sleep and fart just like me. I feel the same about celbrities which ever way they come, through movies, knitblogs or science; Worthy of respect but not of unwarranted (and unwanted??) adoration.
So there you go.
I hear you! Every community has their rockstars, even knitting. That's why I always say, it's sticks and yarn, people! :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm still a fan of YH tho.
Last night we put on the sleeper you gave our little Cashew. She looked like a little peppermint! So adorable. I wanted to take a pic this morning to send to you, but soon as her diaper came off, she peed. On the sleeper. Next time!
Sounds like a theme I'm hearing of the Q&A Whores...
ReplyDeleteSorry to have missed it (the event not the whoring) in my own city.
Cheers from China!
