These were the first set of DPNs I ever owned. They came from a bag of thrift store goodies, along with miles of seam binding and hundreds of pins. They were the first DPNs I ever knit a sock on and while I may have moved on to bigger and better and more aluminium things, these needles remain with me. Why? Not because they are bendy and give me hand cramps, and not because they are a size I normally use for socks. I keep them because they are invisible to X-ray and can fly. As an added bonus, if you bend them too far they can also fly of their own volition.

I'm headed east to Manchester, the other "home". See you on the flip side.

Long time no hear

I packed.

I moved.

And then I inadvertently crocheted Barbie.

I was browsing around Ravelry yesterday when I stumbled upon this blog (don't look if you don't want your eyes seared with loveliness). A while ago (egads, a year ago!?) I got all in a tizzy about crocheting the ripple blanket that was sweeping the internets, and I got maybe 10 inches into it before I gave up. But then I saw the granny squares on the blog above and boom, I was off! I completed two squares last night that are extreme in their girliness, but I have blues and greens to temper the pinks in other squares. Hopefully this project will be seen through to completion because if not, the yarn will be donated and the crochet hooks banished ;)

Cuteness

I've out cuted myself.

I like making traditions for myself and this is the beginning of a new one. Last year for my friend's baby's 1st birthday I made him a sweater and a soft toy (Child's Placket Neck Sweater and Sheldon), so this year I'm also making him a sweater and soft toy. The sweater is the striped cardi from Lion Brand in cotton ease pistachio, popsicle and candy blue. Yes, I have more cotton ease in pistachio and popsicle than I know what to do with and will probably still be knitting sweaters for Dash in these yarns when he's getting ready to leave for college. But the combination is so cute together! I'm carrying the pistachio up the side to minimize the number of ends I have to weave in, but the ends don't really bother me because the stripes are so addictive!

And for the soft toy? I hoping to make Pasha, since a little bird told me that he loved the penguins at the zoo. Baby stuff is fun :)

Thwarted

So I thought I'd have a FO to show you. The "green" thing from a couple of posts ago is all knitted up and blocked just waiting for it's finishing touches (seams, ribbon etc). But no. The gremlins got in the way.

You see somewhere between my desk and the ribbon shop my wallet disappeared into the ether. Vapourised. I can't think that someone would have had the opportunity to steal it (two layers of Velcro to rip open to get inside my laptop bag, plus a lab full of people) but also I didn't have the opportunity to loose it. It's not at work, at home, in the bag, in the store. It's gone. So my credit cards are canceled, my UK drivers license will have to be replaced somehow (probably when I go home in two weeks), and I'll need new health and dental insurance cards. And the two yards of ribbon that were going to cost me all of 80 cents? Still on the counter in the store :(

Needless to say, I wasn't in the best of moods at the Sit n' Knit event last night. Even the bluegrass couldn't really lift my spirits. And the knitting? There's no love there either. I grabbed one of my languishing UFOs since it was my only portable project and, well, fuck me if I could figure out where I was up to, how I'd managed to mangle the row counts so badly in the cable pattern, or how I'd gotten that loosey-goosey gauge. But hottdamnit, the Snickets are out of hibernation and they will be finished.
